Despo is the Director of Resilience at SCAPE, where she leads teams in urban design and resilience planning to forge nature-based, community-centered strategies that help communities adapt to our changing climate. Her work connects the dots between the environment, people, and design—whether through actionable resilience plans that reduce climate risk, implementation of multi-layered and multi-benefit infrastructure, or climate visualizations that make complex challenges accessible and help guide decision-making. Despo’s recent work includes New York State’s Roadmap for Envisioning Managed Retreat, Louisiana’s Coastal Master Plan, Massachusetts’ ResilientCoasts Plan, Battery Park City’s North/West Resiliency Project, and Climate Ready Dorchester in Boston.

Out of Harm’s Way: Practical Strategies for Managed Retreat
Communities nationwide are facing increasing flood risks, and traditional methods are proving inadequate against these challenges. The real estate and land use industry and local governments need to start exploring alternative adaptation strategies. Managed retreat is a proactive approach that involves forward-looking social, economic, policy, and land use planning. Join this session to learn practical ways to facilitate managed retreat through communication, policy, acquisition, and market-based tools, drawing on case studies and lessons learned from New York, the Gulf Coast, California, and Washington.
