Ariane Laxo is Director of Sustainability at HGA, a national interdisciplinary architecture and engineering firm working with public, private, non-profit, and higher education clients to advance decarbonization, resilience, and healthy communities through the built environment. Over the last decade, she has organized industry leaders and collaborated with climate scientists to understand how climate projection models can be downscaled and used to inform architecture and engineering workflows. Aiming to fill the climate adaptation gap in AEC industry building codes, design process, and standard of care, Ariane is working with University of Minnesota Climate Adaptation Partnership and the Center for Sustainable Building Research on a collaborative research project to create data tools, education, and design workflows that bridge climate projection models across the last mile to data end users and climate services providers in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. In her work as Director of Sustainability, she works on large, complex projects in diverse sectors - from healthcare to science & technology, cultural to higher education. She coordinates with the design team, owners/operators, and contractors to execute high performance goals that balance climate change mitigation and adaptation. An expert facilitator and project manager, Ariane distills complex issues into tangible workplans and original outcomes.

Where Science Meets Design: Using Climate Projections in Portfolio and Land Use Planning
Current planning for real estate portfolios, governments, and campuses is informed by outdated, backward-looking weather data. A new process is emerging that brings the climate science, design and real estate communities together to use future-facing climate projections, providing sufficient detail to analyze the potential impacts of climate change on buildings, infrastructure, and communities. Using these projections can better meet the intended goals of building owners and stakeholders- including financial, decarbonization, and well-being-over the lifespan of each development. Join this session to explore how a collaborative team is developing and integrating higher quality climate data into planning processes for both private and public sector portfolios to thrive well into the future.
