In late 2019, WLI Washington began looking for opportunities to create mentorship and career development opportunities for young women (and men) that might not historically be exposed to careers in commercial real estate. The chapter found an engaged partner in the Maya Angelou Charter School (MACS) based in Washington, D.C. This partnership and program launched in October 2020, runs for the length of the school year, and provides MACS students in the hospitality and business programs with a case study curriculum focused on professional readiness through the lens of real estate development. In each session, approximately 10-15 students learn directly from women and other individuals involved in the entitlement, design, financial structuring, construction and operations of development. Student’s “graduate” from the program with an end of year celebration including catered lunch, a site visit to a local development project featured in the sessions, and professional headshots.
