Galleria Shopping Centre and the Dufferin Mall are in many ways quintessential urban commercial centers: landscapes that prioritize big-box retail, surrounded by seas of parking, located on uninviting arterials. Despite these design challenges, these retail centers can serve important functions: Galleria is an important community anchor, providing essential services and a protected gathering space for local residents; and Dufferin Mall is one of the most profitable malls in Canada, with anchor tenants that serve residents near and far.
 

This tour will consider the two commercial centers and their surrounding contexts, engaging with the challenges and opportunities associated with transforming and revitalizing malls. By getting an overview of the two different master plans, participants will gain insight and learn how collaboration with community residents resulted in development plans that respond to local priorities.
