Providing health and recreational benefits, Toronto’s ravines are a major part of the city’s green infrastructure. They are also a significant part of the larger watershed system, helping filter and transport stormwater, enhance biodiversity, and reduce urban heat islands.
Toronto’s strategy for its ravines is intended to support its vast ravine network, but as cities continue to generate solutions to the climate emergency, there are lessons to be learned for all urban development. On this tour, participants will learn about the city’s innovative strategy, the benefits of renaturalization more broadly, and how green infrastructure solutions can be imbedded within contemporary development to deliver more sustainable and livable communities. The tour will include stops within the Don Valley Ravine, Evergreen Brickworks, the West Don Lands, and the Portlands–one of North America’s largest infrastructure projects.
