Toronto continues to be supercharged for growth. But a critical question facing the city is whether the legacy of mixed-income affordable residential communities that serve both subsidized and market-rate housing demands will define future development. From the acclaimed 1970s St. Lawrence Neighborhood to the current redevelopment of postwar housing projects of Regent Park, Alexandra Park, and Lawrence Heights, Toronto’s vision of strengthening communities by blurring the income lines of their residents is a signature success story. However, a massive surge in population growth in the core city and across the region is fueling an unprecedented housing affordability crisis at both low- and middle-income levels, triggering an array of supply and demand efforts to arrest this troubling trajectory. This session will draw on historic successes and current challenges, while exploring new proposals from the current administration that are designed to build upon, and strengthen, this legacy of inclusive city-building.
